Chartreuses of Bordeaux
Bordeaux's famous mansions
During your visits with our agency to the Bordeaux’ countryside in search of a vineyard property or a holiday home, you surely have noticed the architecture shared by a number of properties... these are our ‘Chartreuses’! This characteristic Chartreuse style bears witness to the region's rich history.
In the heart of the majestic Gironde region, these Chartreuses stand proudly, silent witnesses to a time when the aristocracy and bourgeoisie wished to enjoy their country residence in season. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, these sumptuous buildings are distinguished by their timeless elegance, clean lines and symmetrical facades, often on one level, embodying the refinement of aristocratic architecture to perfection. They are generally surrounded by vast gardens and parks or wine estates.
Following the example of the Palladian mansions favored by wealthy Venetians in the 16th century, Bordeaux's aristocrats abandoned the urban turmoil to retreat to these havens of peace, and had pleasure residences built in the midst of vast green expanses. Far from the hustle and bustle of the towns and villages, these light-filled mansions offered their owners a rural refuge.
The origins of this elegant style lie not only in the twists and turns of aristocratic history, but also in the Chartreuse massif, where Saint-Bruno and his companions founded the Carthusian (Chartreux in French) Order in the 11th century. The Carthusian style, which is widespread throughout France, has its origins in the Grenoble region, where the penetrating light and harmonious simplicity of the buildings evoke the serenity of the Carthusian monasteries.
The sober, distinguished elegance of these houses resonates with that of the monasteries of the Carthusian Order, evoking a subtle link between these two seemingly different worlds. Like sentinels of the past, the Carthusian monasteries of the Gironde enrich the architectural and historical landscape of the surrounding countryside.
Their pure lines and beautiful openings create an art of living in communion with nature and light. Carved out of stone or built of rubble, they embody the very essence of the Carthusian style, where simplicity and harmony reign supreme, perpetuating the architectural and spiritual heritage of a bygone era.
The Carthusian Order had a significant influence on the Bordeaux region. The order settled in Bordeaux, particularly in the famous Chartrons district, from which it takes its name. At the time, English, Dutch, Irish and other nationalities settled in this area to develop their businesses. These inhabitants were commonly known as the Chartrons, in reference to the monks' convent.
Now you know all about these famous Bordeaux chartreuses! If the noble, elegant spirit of the Chartreuses appeals to you, our agency can offer you properties in this style, in the Bordeaux countryside; these are family homes par excellence. Are you coming?
